The Brandywine Estate in Briarcliff Manor, New York was built in 1909 by Isaac Newton Spiegelberg and was originally named Miramont Court. The mansion was built in a Tudor style, and had 49 rooms. The property also had outbuildings, a 75-foot water tower, and 20 acres of extensively landscaped land. After Isaac Spiegelberg died in 1927, the estate was sold to a woman named Ethel Barksdale, a relative of the Du Pont family. The Barksdale’s remodeled the mansion, and they renamed it Brandywine. The Barksdale’s sold the property in 1931 to Edward Walker Hardens, a newspaper man. The Hardens never occupied the mansion, however they had full time caretakers keeping up with maintenance of the property. The history from then-on remains anonymous, but at some point, a nursing home moved into the Brandywine Estate, using the old 1909 Tudor Style mansion as their main building for patients. At some point, a newer nursing home structure was built on the property, and the old Brandywine Estate was left abandoned. Now, it’s been left to decay for around 20 years, and unfortunately, a future for this historic mansion isn’t looking promising.
